Eleanor Formaggio – Parent with Potential

Today I’m pleased to introduce Eleanor Formaggio to share her experiences as a Professional Parent.  Based in Sydney, Australia and mother to three boys, aged 11, 10 & 5, she owns Parent With Potential, which is now 8 years old.  Holding a Bachelor of Applied Social Science (Counselling), Eleanor says she uses the skills she learnt in this study all the time with her kids!

Recently, Eleanor published her first book: In this present moment: Quality time ideas for busy parents, which I am proud to have contributed to.  Read to the end of this post for a special offer on this book.

Here’s the email interview with Eleanor:

How did you come to start your own business?

I started out with a counselling practice and developing and selling products.  Flexibility was the driver and now I help out a business part time with their social media and online selling platform.

What was life like before children?

Routine and lots of spare time to read or just go out.

Compared to after children?

Not a dull moment, have to think about the kids before doing anything and not a lot of spare time

How many hours a week do you work?

My part time work is 16 hours per week and then on my own business another 14 hours.

Tips for family work balance?

Flexibility! when my children need me I’m there for them and other times I can focus on work.  It balances out in the end – it’s more prioritizing really and it’s seasonal, you get out of something what you put into it.

What was most unexpected about becoming a parent?

3 boys! Always imagined having a girl.

Was there anything unexpected about starting a business?

How much time it takes up but I love what I do and the business continually develops and evolves.

A recent moment you’re most proud of?

Being able to watch my children use their talents and succeed in sport, academics or socially.  Finishing my first book which deals with the question of quality time, loved connecting with other parents and exploring what they do.

One of your recent challenges?

Remaining positive and coping with change, I have diversified my business a lot.

Advice to others starting out in business?

Love it (the product or service you want to provide) or don’t do it, because it can consume you.

Describe your office:

Piles of papers fill my desk! Otherwise it is a large light filled space with not much on the walls.

Do you have a typical day to describe?

I drop the kids at school, check emails and Facebook for 10 minutes, head off to work for 4 hours, then back in time for school pick up, eat with the boys, quick check of emails and Facebook and then check the boy’s homework and then work on the computer for an hour or two.  Then it’s sports and dinner. Then another hour working on the computer.

What do you love about being in business?

What do you think is a myth about being in business?

That you get used to it, it is always changing with every stage.
