Katrina Dekker – Superpower Education

Katrina Dekker

A warm welcome to the site to Katrina Dekker of Superpower Education.  Though she isn’t a parent herself, I think it’s also great to have people as part of our community who understand the challenges professional parents face and offer great services to them.   Katrina started this business, based on the Sunshine Coast/Brisbane in April 2012 and in her own words….

How did you start your business?

I really wanted to empower people through learning. I thought that I could do this as a counsellor or teacher however these roles were too restrictive.  I’m not interested in diagnosing but providing the opportunity to show people the resources that they have and how these resources can be used to achieve goals. Instead of them being stopped by their perceived limitations. As serious as this sounds, it doesn’t have to be. I love creative fun learning so that’s what I create in my lessons.

How many hours a week do you work?

That’s a tricky questions as so much of what I do I don’t see as work. I could easily work 40 hours a week on tasks relevant to my business. These hours include creating movie scenes with children or lunch with business friends so you can see my dilemma.

One of your own favourite products/services?

Breaking down learning barriers program. This can be applied to anyone. Through this program we learn how to not be stopped with “I can’t, I’m not good at this, I’m bored” and much more.

Any professional qualifications you’d like to mention?

I have a BA with a double major in Psychology, minor in Anthropology, Graduate Certificate in Counseling and a Graduate Diploma in Primary Education.

Something unexpected about starting a business?

How many hats I am constantly trying on. These hats could be sales, marketing, finance, public speaking, the list goes on.

Your greatest wish for your business?

I wish to empower millions of lives so that they can achieve their goals and love their life.

A recent achievement?

I am tutoring a lady with an intellectual impairment. She amazes me with her effort and what she is achieving in our lessons. Her parents say that she is so happy to be achieving and learning something. It’s in these moments that I’m so inspired and loving what I do.

Biggest challenge?

My biggest challenge is communicating what I do clearly. As my business is a new concept, I feel it takes some explaining on my behalf before people understand my service.

Advice to others starting out in business?

Not to get distracted with other business ideas that prevent you from being successful in what you are currently doing.

What kind of work does your partner do?  And are they supportive of your business?

He is a helicopter engineer.  Yes, he knows that I want to change many lives and keeps me accountable to my cause.

What’s a typical day like for you?

I don’t have a typical day but I am in the midst of creating some structures and procedures to ensure that I don’t miss any details.

What do you love about being in business?

I love being able to plan my day around what works for me. I know that I produce my best work in the mornings so that’s when I schedule all of my ‘thinking’ tasks. Then I schedule all of my running around in the afternoon. I just love it.

What do you think is a myth about being in business?

That as a business owner you have to be a particular way. Being the way you are is just perfect.

Tips for work life balance?

As I love what I do it is easy for time to slip away. Therefore it’s essential to schedule all of the important things. My partner and I schedule date night on Friday nights so that we know that is our time together.
