I’ve learnt a lot about writing press releases from a great webinar from Working Women Online presented by Sue Murphy where she and Toni Louise interviewed Sue Papadoulis. (I plan on writing separate posts on these amazing women some other time!). Sue generously shares a lot of tips on how to get free publicity for your business, which I most certainly need as I don’t have an advertising budget at all (and know many of us don’t.)
Though I still have a lot to learn, I thought I would share a blog post in the style of the press release which I am sending to local media. Will be interesting to see if any of them print it. Photo is of my girls a few months ago, and is one of my favourites, but don’t think it is the one I will send with the press release – I am thinking of using one of Big Cake, Little Cake’s delicious cupcakes at a recent event, off to find a suitable one now.
Professional Parents Playgroup launches in North Lakes
The Professional Parents Network is a group of talented and friendly mums and dads who balance business and family. Also known as WAHPs (Work at Home Parents), WAHMs (Work at home Mums) or Mumpreneurs (combining being a mum and an entrepreneur), most own their own business (or would like to) and find mixing with others in the same situation is a way to learn from and support each other.
The Playgroup will meet regularly at the North Lakes Community Centre from Monday 16th August, 9.30am-11.00am. This meeting aims to discuss future dates and plans and is open to anyone with children under school age who is happy to “talk business” yet also have fun and relax while the children play. Both mums and dads most welcome. Cost is $5 per family.
This date coincides with RSPCA Cupcake Day and local Professional Parent, Janelle Fuller of Big Cake, Little Cake will be baking up a storm of delicious treats to raise money for this great cause. These can be pre-ordered and collected at the Playgroup, or some will be available to purchase on the day.
Founded by local mum, Renèe Veldman-Tentori, the concept of Professional Parents grew from her own experiences of trying to balance business and babies. “I run my own marketing business from home which I built to be able to continue to use my previous career experience and degree, yet still care for my two young girls. Though I love being a mum, I still have that entrepreneurial drive and passion for my career so wanted to create a situation where I could truly have that work life balance. I came up with the term Professional Parents to represent combining these two important aspects of my life and after realising that many others were trying to do the same. I found that hardest thing about working from home was the isolation. I started connecting with friends via Facebook but wanted face to face communication as well. So I started bringing together groups of like-minded people to learn from each other’s experiences. This has now grown to be quite a large local network of parents who help support and build each other’s businesses.”
Regular Professional Parents Workshops have been offered since March in Brisbane and on the Sunshine Coast, where parents network and learn important business skills. The unique difference from most business networking and training events is that young children are welcome and catered for. Guest speakers present on topics relevant to parents in business such as marketing, managing finances and parenting advice. The new Playgroup will offer a more informal alternative to these workshops.
